In a statement Friday, the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) said PIPOC, the biggest oil palm-related congress, will provide a strategic platform for interaction and in-depth deliberation of the many facets of the industry, including current issues and developments, market trends, innovations, opportunities and challenges.

MPOB said the delegates, industry leaders, experts and government officials from over 40 countries are expected to be at PIPOC 2011, which will be officiated by Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok.

It said PIPOC 2011's theme, "Palm Oil -- Fortifying and Energising the World", will focus on palm oil as the powerhouse in the oils and fats market and advances in the industry, including the need to balance its growth in harmony with the environment for sustainable development.

MPOB said the highlight of PIPOC 2011 will be the five conferences held concurrently covering all aspects and issues pertaining to the industry.

"The focus on the environment for the palm oil industry is in tandem with growing global concerns on environmental conservation and sustainable production in the agricultural sector.

"These environmentally-related issues, technology breakthroughs and the outlook of the commodity will be addressed by industry leaders and experts," it said.

It said with the fluctuating prices and the fear of the slowing down of the global economy, PIPOC will discuss the outlook of the industry.

Sime Darby Bhd chairman, Tun Musa Hitam, will deliver the keynote address titled, "Palm Oil: Fortifying and Energising the World".

MPOB director-general, Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May, will moderate the much-anticipated Evening Forum themed "Bracing Change for a Sustainable Tomorrow" which will discuss issues facing the industry, food security, impact of politics on economics and trade issues amid crisis.

The panel members for the forum include Mohamad Nageeb Ahmad Abdul Wahab (Sime Darby Plantation Sdn Bhd), Prof Dr Fatimah Mohamed Arshad (Universiti Putra Malaysia) and Dr James Fry (LMC International, UK).

It said PIPOC 2011 is held at an opportune time as the Malaysian government has recognised the palm oil industry as a strategic and important sector in transforming the country into a high-income economy.

"Under the Economic Transformation Programme, the palm oil industry is targeted to achieve a gross national income of RM178 billion in 2020.

"To further enhance the industry's growth across the whole supply chain, the government has identified eight Entry Point Projects under the palm oil  National Key Economic Area," it said.

Over 200 booths from local and international exhibitors will be featured at PIPOC 2011.

The technical tours will take delegates to visit MPOB Research Station Kluang, Johor, Sime Darby Jomalina Food Industries Sdn Bhd, Kuala Langat (refinery), Sime Darby Biodiesel Plant, Pulau Carey (biodiesel), Palm Oleo Sdn Bhd, Rawang (oleochemical plant) and Kompleks Felda Besout, Perak (plantation and mill).
